How to join the discussion

This section will be all about how to post your comments, and the nuts and bolts of  how to share thoughts with each other. Click on “comment” under this area to add your thoughts to this particular topic.

Our new blog can be used in many ways: student thoughts, teacher comments to add to instruction, history, etiquette, suggestions.

First, though, you must register, by clicking on “register” to the right of the page. After filling out the information, check your email for a randomly-generated password (since it will be long and random, best to “copy” it).

Now you are ready to log in, so click on “log in” to the right of the page. After you log in, at the bottom of that page you have an opportunity to change your password to one you will actually remember.

Logged in? Then click on the phrase “visit site” in the top horizontal bar. Then click on the “blog” menu. If you click on “comment” under each discussion, you can add your own comment.

Each topic on the main blog page will have a category listed under it.  When you click on comments, you can read all the contributions to that category, and you can also add your own thoughts.

It seems like much of what people appear to be looking for here is more of a ‘forum’ experience than a blog. I think it would fit better with the overall construction as well. A blog is typically from a single author and is more or less a digest chronically news, often of a particular nature. Conversely, a forum is generally a place for discussion of ideas in threads, typically with multiple authors and often with various dedicated section for discussion of particularly topics. PHP forum is a good choice and free.

Good points, Alex. I think what we are trying to achieve is what you describe as a forum. Blog is probably a misnomer, and that could be easily changed.

We can achieve different threads by labeling different types of discussion, ie, class comments can be under “class observations and notes.” When someone clicks on “comment” under the main heading “class observations and notes” then the various comments by various people are revealed.

I am encouraging everyone to contribute – it’s still early days for that.

Right, it just seems that forcing what is essentially blog format and function to give forum results is counter productive. For one, it seems like it will place a lot of expectations on the webmasters to create artificial framework of organization and to continually update it, whereas such functionality is intrinsic to a forum. At any rate, I realize it is a work in progress.
